Welcome to Year 6!
At the beginning of this year we shared a book by Oliver Jeffers called ‘Here we are: Notes for living on Planet Earth’ and used this to inspire us to create self portraits. We also looked at artwork by Frida Kahlo as inspiration; she was renowned for her expressive self portraits. The children worked carefully with their drawings and selected bold oil pastel colours to produce what I’m sure you’ll agree are excellent pieces of art.
We have also begun reading The Garden of Lost Secrets. The book is set during World War 1 which has sparked the children’s curiosity; we will be researching more about this as the topic evolves. Locally, there are the Gardens of Eastern Lodge that have some similarities with the setting in the book. The children have been finding out about Eastern lodge (where we sadly cannot visit this year) and seemed really keen to explore it. If you would like to take a visit, they are having open days on September 13th and October 11th. Visit their website to find out more and book tickets:
I’m sure many of the children would love to visit the gardens in person.
In Science we will be looking at plants so have set up ‘bottle gardens’ in the classroom to investigate what seeds can be found in soil samples and whether these will germinate into plants.
It has been a lovely week welcoming the children back and helping them settle. We hope your child has come home excited about the year ahead of them.
