On Monday 27th June, the Year 5s enjoyed an entire day of ancient Greek activities. We were visited by Mark (otherwise known by his Greek name, Nineus) from ‘Portals to the Past’, who provide exciting, hands on History days. After an introductory talk on Greek life and culture, the children took part in a quiz, where they found out lots of new and interesting facts about famous Greeks, and events from the time that we still find fascinating today! The children then really enjoyed learning how to play Pettia – a Greek strategy game, and they exercised their minds to complete the Archimedes Stomachion puzzle. Mark brought in examples of Greek armour, which were extremely large and heavy, but the children and teachers were still allowed to try them on. He also showed us some terrifying weapons and explained what they were designed to do. The day ended with great excitement as the children competed against each other in a re-enactment of the ancient Greek Olympics!
