Reception 2020 information

We are so looking forward to meeting all your children in September. We know that the lack of physical contact with our school makes it harder to prepare your child for their reception year. We hope you have had a chance to watch the presentation by Mrs Griffiths and please find a link below to a summary of the information.

You might also like to share the video below with your child.  If you attended our Open Evening last year you would have seen this.  It will give you an idea of the activities the children will be participating in when they join us.

We have also asked your child’s teacher to share more information so please click on the relevant photo below to find this.

Meeting your class teacher

A really key part of our program is the opportunity for the class teacher to meet on a 1:1 basis with yourselves your child so that we can start to build a relationship.  Whilst we usually do this by visiting the child’s home, sadly, due to current restrictions we are unable to offer this.  However, we are very pleased to be able to offer an individual session for one of you and your child to come into school.

This will be a 20-minute session where you will see the reception classroom and talk to your child’s teacher about any concerns you have on a one to one basis; chairs will be set up just outside the classroom and at a safe distance.

On the day and time of the visit please come to the school drive gate (first school gate on the left as you come down High Stile) where you will be able to buzz the office and access a parking space if needed. You will be met here by the class teacher before making your way to the classroom. Appointments will run every 30 minutes so we are asking for your support by arriving in a timely manner to ensure that these run smoothly. Unfortunately, if you are more than 10 minutes late we will not be able to show you the classroom.

Starting School in September

Following the 1:1 sessions we will then be offering sessions for the children to begin school in small groups to allow them to get to know the teacher and the setting. Again the timings of these have been arranged carefully to fit in with our overall planning for returning to school in September so we will once again be asking for your support in being punctual for dropping off and picking up times.  Please see below for the timetable.

When you arrive at school from Tuesday the 8th onwards please use the back access gate only and make your way to the early years outside area. Here you will be met by your child’s class teacher who will take your child into class. Under normal circumstances we would allow parents to stay and settle their child for the first few days or until they feel happy. As you can appreciate this is not something we will be able to accommodate this year. During your one to one session the class teacher will chat to you about how best to support your child with transition and discuss this in more detail.

If you have another child in a different year group you will need to follow the guidance set out in their year group letter. We have staggered the start times of our group sessions to ensure you are able to do this.

At the end of the group sessions or after lunch you will collect your child from the same place as you dropped them. Again access is only through the back gate.

Our morning routine

To help you and your child understand how the day will start when they join us, we have a short video which you may wish to share with your child to show him/her what happens.

Coming into school

Lunch

On Thursday 10th Group 1 will stay for lunch for the first time and on Friday 11th Group 2 will stay. This will allow the children to experience school lunches in small groups and in a quieter environment. From Monday 14th September all children will stay for lunch.

All of our YR children have a hot school dinner. We appreciate that this may cause some initial worries as children may be fussy eaters. However, our skilled and nurturing lunchtime staff have had huge successes in persuading children to try foods they initially don’t want to eat and of course, we will not let your children go hungry. If your child has allergies, then we can cater for any of these and you should already have provided details of this on their new starter forms. They will be eating in the lunch hall supported by their teachers and teaching assistants as well as the lunchtime staff.

Start of School Day

From Wednesday 16th September your child will be attending school full-time.  The arrangements for dropping off and collecting your child will stay the same: only the times will change. Please continue to use the back gate of school only.  Walk up the path and hand your child over to the class teacher at the gate to the Reception outside classroom. We are afraid that adults cannot come into the school building until all Covid 19 restrictions are lifted. Please also go out the back gate of school. The gate will be unlocked at 8.40am and you can arrive any time between 8.40 and 9.00am.  If you have older children please walk them to the first playground and they can then leave you and walk round to their classroom door.

End of the Day

School will finish at 3pm for children until we can return completely to normal. The back gate will be opened at 2.50pm. Please make your way up to school and your children will come out to meet you behind the YR outside classroom at 3.00pm with their teachers. Please go back out through the back gate. If you have older children you can wait for them on the back playground and they will come to you when they are let out by their teacher.

Drinks and snacks

Every child needs a named water bottle in school please as we are unable to use shared cups or water fountains. A mid-morning snack will be provided.

We really look forward to seeing you in September.   If you have any questions, please give the office a ring and we will be happy to help.
